Job Summary

The Director of Campus Recreation & Wellness provides visionary leadership for the Department of Campus Recreation & Wellness within the Division of Student Affairs. The Director oversees a campus-wide recreation and wellness program including club sports, fitness, intramurals, open recreation, outdoor recreation, and special events. Additionally, the Director is responsible for the management and operation of the Davis Student Commons (approx. 38,000 sq. ft), River House (approx. 12,000 sq. ft), Moran Center, Wurn Pool, and Low Element Challenge Course including the scheduling of events, student employment, and programming. The Director will be responsible for maintaining and enhancing the Student Live & Grow Well program which is a professional development program based on life skills, competencies, and the JU Student Affairs Nine (9) Dimensions of Wellness.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  •  Supervises Assistant Director of Operations and Coordinator of Outdoor Recreation & Communication.
  • Directly oversees two graduate assistants.
  • Oversees daily workflow of the department.
  • Recruit, hire, train, schedule, supervise, mentor, develop and evaluate a team of student employees, including building managers and IM coordinators.
  • Provides leadership and support for the Club sports regarding decision making, responsibility organizational dynamics, teamwork, conflict resolution, and creating a positive culture within each of their teams.
  • Direct oversight of 6-8 intramural coordinators

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership in the development and assessment of initiatives, which supports the University’s mission, vision, and strategic goals.
  • Oversees all operations and facilitations of low element challenge courses on campus.
  • Evaluate and assess campus recreation and develop a strategic plan that encompasses departmental operations; programs and services, including club sports, intramurals, fitness, and long-term planning for outdoor recreation; facilities usage, maintenance, and expansion; and organizational structure, optimal staffing levels, and configuration for achieving departmental goals and priorities.
  • Oversee the development and implementation of a comprehensive intramural sports program.
  • Oversee all aspects of the sport club program, including reviewing and approving proposals for the formation of new sport clubs.
  • Oversee the development and implementation of a comprehensive student wellness program, focusing on the nine Dimensions of Wellness.
  • Monitor equipment use in the fitness center and schedule maintenance on the machines as needed.
  • Coordinates Student Employee Training program across the department.
  • Participate fully in Student Life and Campus Recreation & Wellness functions, meetings, and programs.
  • Serve as a resource/representative to the university community as requested on topics of recreation and student wellness.
  • Evening and weekend responsibilities, as well as other relevant duties assigned by the Senior Vice President for Student Affairs.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities

  • Knowledge of campus recreation and wellness programming management theories, practices, and techniques.
  • Working knowledge of fitness equipment, its maintenance and proper usage.
  • Excellent management and leadership skills.
  • Excellent computer skills.
  • Social Media Marketing/branding knowledge.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and to delegate them when appropriate.
  • Strong conflict management, and problem-solving skills.

Education, Certificates, Licenses, & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in a field related to Recreation, Sport Administration/Management
  • Preferred: master’s degree in a field related to Recreation, Sport Administration/Management, Health/Physical Education and/or Exercise Science
  • 5+ years of related experience examining operations and procedures, formulating policy, and developing and implementing new strategies and protocols related to Recreation/IM Sports/Wellness.
  • CPR/First Aid certified.
  • Proficient in Scheduling software: 25 live, When to Work, IM Leagues.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to lift and carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to bend, stoop, and reach.
  • Manual dexterity to efficiently operate a computer keyboard and other business machines.
  • Adequate hearing to communicate effectively in person and by phone.
