The Academic Support Center and Writing Center will reopen on August 15 for the Fall 2022 session.

Tutoring is a free service provided to Jacksonville University undergraduate students. Tutoring through the ASC is not a service provided to the general community.

The Academic Support Center (ASC) is open for tutoring for JU undergraduates. Students have three ways to schedule an appointment:

  • Stop by the ASC (Swisher Library 3rd Floor)
  • Call the ASC at 904-256-7123
  • email tutoring@ju.edu
  • Schedule online; see instructions here

The ASC peer tutors will be available for individual, in-person tutoring in the ASC. We will do our best to strike a balance between in-person and virtual tutoring hours for all tutors and subject areas.

We highly recommend scheduling an appointment in advance, but you can drop by the ASC or try online for an available tutor. If no one is available when you 'drop in' the assistants will help you schedule an appointment. You can schedule an appointment up to two weeks in advance or as little as 15 minutes before the session. All tutoring appointments are scheduled for 50 minutes; your appointment can last from just a few minutes up to the 50-minute limit, depending on your questions and concerns.

Instructions for scheduling an appointment can be found in the "Make An Appointment" tab to the left.

Important Policies

Frequency of Tutoring

Due to the high demand for tutoring, the ASC has had to implement the below restrictions in the past. If demand is not too high, the ASC may remove these limits; the ASC reserves the right to reinstate any limits at any time. Please check with our staff to see our current policies.

  • 1 recurring/weekly appointment per course
  • No more than 2 appointments per course in a week
  • No more than 4 appointments across all courses in a week
  • No back-to-back appointments with the same tutor
  • No more than 1 appointment with the same tutor in a single day

All tutoring sessions can last up to 50 minutes. However, you are not required to stay the full time if you only have a few questions or finish early.

Note: If you have a documented learning difference and have registered with Disability Support Services, some of these restrictions can be waived. Please contact Dr. Lee Ann Clements if you have any questions about this.

Tutoring at Jacksonville University

We help students become stronger, more confident learners. We assist students in developing the necessary skills and strategies for successful learning and realizing their academic goals. Our primary goal is to help JU students reach their academic potential through peer assistance.

The peer tutors are all JU students who are successful in their studies and welcome the opportunity to help their classmates succeed. All tutors go through extensive training aligned with the standards by the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) and must maintain a minimum of a 3.2 GPA. Many tutors are also Resident Assistants, Student-Athletes, leaders of Student Government, Research Assistants, and more.

Tutors can assist students with course material and with developing and improving successful learning strategies. Our services are available to all undergraduate students for no additional charge. For Fall 2022, our services include:

  • One-on-one Tutoring
    • Virtual
    • In Person
  • Weekly Tutoring (individual)
  • Online Resources
